Named after Oz’s grandmother, Gertraude, Spearmaiden is an ode to the Indigenous, Aboriginal, & pre-colonial archetype of a being who leads with empathy, strength, and generosity. Spearmaiden was birthed in response to a need for a community-centered container for creatives to connect, collaborate, process, and revel in the beauty of life. It is more than a tattoo studio, Spearmaiden is an experimental space for artists to expand their practice(s).
We strive to create an environment that welcomes and inspires creativity through an anti-racist, collaborative, and constructive lens. We are a space for interdisciplinary and multimodality art that prioritizes the health, safety, and liberation of our community over perfectionism and individualism.
Harassment, discrimination, and bigotry of any kind is not welcome at Spearmaiden, yet we understand that harm is inevitable. It is imperative to us that all artists and guests have the desire to engage in repair from harm, and at the very least, communicate through conflict. <3 We expect that all tattoo artists and guests understand and work against the characteristics of white supremacy culture. We also do our best to provide a clean, inclusive, and hazard free space that complies with Los Angeles occupational health and safety laws.
